Friday
Nothing like waking up to the glaring bang of the miners bell! We are officially starting to feel the real experience of the people of Velenje! Today we went on a tour of Velenje and the Velenje castle. On the way to tour we had the pleasure of running into a miner. July 3rd is a day of celebration for miners, so it was especially nice to see this man walking through the city. Professor Dolar was able to translate for us, allowing us to learn more about him. He was very proud to be wearing his uniform. Our tour guide was so knew so much about the town and we really learned alot about the culture, and the hidden gems (like a chocolate shop)!! On our tour of the city center we saw largest statue of Josip Broz Tito, who was Yugoslavia's president at the time of the collapse. As a class, we were able to ride the FREE public bus! Which is one of the many, free, publicly accessible aspects of Slovenia. The best part about this is that the tax payers of the city do not have higher taxes than other cities and towns in Slovenia. |
